Luis de Guindos has been Minister of Economy and Competitiveness since December 2011 under the presidency of Mariano Rajoy. He was also considered to chair the Eurogroup on several occasions without final results. Since 2016 he has been Minister of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness. 

He has a deep knowledge and experience in finance and economics, both in the private and public sector. During his time at the head of the Ministry of Economy, he has faced more financial and economic crises and has played an important role in the resolution and restructuring of the Spanish financial and banking systems. 

Luis de Guindos began his political career in 1996, when his current party (Partido Popular) came to power with José María Aznar as president. During Aznar’s government he was appointed director general of Economic Policy and Defense of Competition, as well as a member of the board of directors of Renfe (Spanish railway services) and the Official Credit Institute (ICO). Mr. de Guindos was subsequently appointed Secretary of State for Economy. 

Mr. de Guindos also worked for Lehman Brothers as an advisor to the European branch and as head of Lehman Brothers Spain and Portugal. After this period, he was appointed head of the financial division of PricewaterhouseCoopers until his appointment as minister. 

Luis de Guindos holds a degree in Economics and Business Administration from CUNEF (Colegio Universitario de Estudios Financieros).
