Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation

José Manuel Albares was born in 1972 in Madrid, he graduated in Law from the University of Deusto and holds a diploma in Business Studies.
He is Consul in Bogotá, he was also an advisor to the Permanent Representation of Spain to the OECD.
He was an advisor on international relations to Pedro Sánchez during his first period as leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party Sánchez appointed him advisor in the Cabinet of the Presidency of the Government, after his arrival to the Government Presidency in June 2018, in position of Secretary General for International Affairs, European Union, G20 and Global Security, with the rank of Undersecretary. Albares, who left his post as a cultural counsellor at the Spanish embassy in Paris upon taking up the post, took office on 21 June.
He was subsequently appointed Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to the French Republic in February 2020 and to the Principality of Monaco in May 2020.
