He has been the Mayor of Madrid since 2019. Previously, between 2007 and 2011, he held the position of General Director of Historical Heritage of the Community of Madrid. From 2011 to 2013 he was the General Secretary of the Governing Council of the Community of Madrid and the General Secretary of the Board of Directors of SEPI Desarrollo Empresarial (SEPIDES) (2013-2014). In 2014 he was appointed as Director of the Institutional Legal Division of the Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility. From 2017 to 2019 he became the spokesperson for the PP at the City Council of Madrid.
